Sunset Splendor

True, the island's claim to fame is its 'never-ending' sunshine.

Tourists and locals alike flock to the beautiful beaches, week in a week out. Surfers watch the sunrise from the waters, hikers scan the horizon from the vertex of Diamond Head, and late-nighters have their sleep intruded by bright rays of sunshine peaking through their apartment curtains.

But O'ahu by night holds it's own glory. Glory marked profoundly by the magnificent daily sunsets over Barbers Point.

Here is a little bit of evidence...

Oysters Ala-Extreme at Atlantis Seafood and Steak

For the oyster lover like me...

If oysters are your object, Atlantis Seafood and Steak is your destination.
Nestled on a central Kalakaua balcony next to the local hit, “C.P.K.” (California Pizza Kitchen), Atlantis Seafood and Steak has one of the prime views of the Waikiki strip and offers a number of economic early bird dinner specials. Take a trip to Mexico

Getting to Mexico is an adventure into the ‘hood’, but perhaps that is fitting, and it certainly is worth the excursion. For the average tourist with only a few days on the island, stick to the more central eateries and enjoy the vibrance of downtown Honolulu, but for locals and those with more time on their hands, dinner in Mexico is not something to be missed. Grill it your way at The Shorebird Waikiki

One of my favorite Waikiki dining spots!

When it comes to restaurant intelligence, no doubt about it, The Shorebird outsmarted them all: charge guests to dine out and have them cook their own dinner - GENIUS.One may question then, how can we critique the main course? After all, you have only yourself to blame!

Life in Waikiki, Hawai'i

O'ahu, the island now my home, is perimetered with tassel-haired surfers and timeless tourists, but from the pineapple scented suntan lotion to the indoor galleries, the decorative leis to the store front men in suits, the large dining portions to the fitness fixation, and from the tropical downpours to the fluorescent rainbows, it is the most fantastic and irresistible mix - the perfectly balanced lifestyle.

The glass skyscrapers reflect the sunset; the surfboards silhouette against the horizontal skyline; the businessmen are in flower shirts and the businesswomen formal as can be but with a fresh flower tucked behind their ear; the street crowds range from performer to holiday-maker to care-free local to Gucci capitalist; the food from seafood to fast food to health bar; and the vibe and venues from formal to casual to hippy. But there is one consistency - the 'Ohana' philosophy - treating everyone as family. Hence, the melting pot doesn't bubble over.

Crazy, hectic and expensive as living in Waikiki might be, it is an inspirational and magical experience I am so lucky to be living.

Over the next few months I will share with you my island life. I will blog on attractions, restaurants, beaches, hikes and various other spectacles. I will also include plenty photographs in the hope that for those who cannot visit you may feel, enjoy, taste and possess little pieces of paradise.

Ravenous for Ruth's Chris

And my food critic career begins...

Following the flavor of Julie & Julia's principle, you can never use too much butter, Ruth's Chris Steak House specializes in serving their tantalizingly tender filets sizzling sensationally in a mouthwatering medley of butter, butter and more butter.
